For over 20 years Operation Hope has been a ministry at our church. Pastor Helen Goree views this ministry as “an opportunity for the people of our church to express their heart of service for the Lord.” She adds that “you can see the great joy and satisfaction on the faces of the volunteers.” Pastor Helen’s comments testify to the revolutionary teaching of Jesus that sets us free to have hope. Throughout the gospels, Jesus teaches us that in order to be loved, we are to love; in order to be served, we are to serve; in order to be encouraged, we are to encourage; and thus in order to have hope, we are to provide hope to others.
Under the direction of Natasha Lau, volunteers meet on the third Saturday of each month at our commercial kitchen in their bright yellow Operation Hope t-shirts - which are symbolic of the joy they hold inside. As they prepare the food, clothing, toiletries and blankets our volunteers realize the opportunity for those who are less fortunate to know the reality of hope in Jesus. As Pastor Helen notes, “a perfect example of joy for everyone involved is Sam’s ribs.” She is referencing Sam and Cynthia Chagois, who have been involved in Operation Hope since their arrival at The Champion Center. Sam’s barbeque of ribs and brisket not only provides an incredible meal drawing hundreds to our site on Main Street, it also fills the couple with a level of joy due to the realization of the hope their service provides.
In the ministry for over 50 years, Pastor Helen has continually witnessed how people have gained hope through providing hope for others. She has spent the majority of her ministry focused upon Jesus’ call for the church to care for the widows and orphans (James 1:27), specifically targeting her energies in the work of missions. Remember, our vision statement expresses that each member of our church is to participate in at least one missions trip in their lifetime.
